CAS Creativity and Service - 23rd of April, Children's Day

At 23rd of April we went to “Aziz Nesin Çocuk Vakfı”, which is children’s organization. Students were doing charity works in order to make children happy. An honorable mathematician called Aziz Nesin has established this organization to create events for children and to spend money for the benefits of children. Every year our school organizes events at 23rd of April, the international children day, and try to make children happy. As well as Eyuboglu schools, students from other schools were there to help children, which was a great collaboration.

For creativity, we taught children (3-7 years old) to draw and paint. The had a lot of fun it taught us a lot to be model teachers. For service we helped and entertain them for charity, and gave the art pieces that they have done to them.

I am much more talented than the other students at drawing and painting. We were given some group jobs e.g., drawing, sculpture making, painting walls, painting t-shirts and we worked in accordance with the groups. I showed and taught how to draw and paint to children with more knowledge than the others.

Dealing with children is of course challenging for us. I learned how to manage with children, how to do what they want and to show respect to them. Since we are high school students, it was hard to deal with lower age group. We must have treated everyone equally to apply ethics rules. Chaos wasn’t tolerated at there, because every child was there to have fun.

We executed this CAS event by planning it from earlier. This project was planned in common with CAS department of our school. We also collaborated with students from other schools not only to cooperate, but also to entertain children. We also organized sports activities with other schools.

CAS Project - Young Entrepreneurs School Club

At 24 September 2017, I entered the school club “Young Entrepreneurs”. It’s school club where we produce a product for a social benefit. Every year students attend the local competition and exhibit their final projects. My CAS project involves of creativity and service. This year, after a challenging process, we selected the concept: office and home, and designed 2 products. Our products “clips” and “BookEra” aims to fulfill the responses and needs of office employees.

For service, we designed multi products and donate the money that we gained through our sales to a local charity. For creativity, on behalf of my department, I designed and sketched the products.

I am talented and quite knowledgeable about drawing and designing. So, while we are dividing to departments at the end of the year, I was placed at the head of the design department. We were a model company where we also have a general director. I always helped my friends while we were discussing the new innovations and ideas to find solutions. I’m a creative person, therefore I’m talented to find new solutions to problems. This helps me while designing.

While we were developing the product, there were of course some challenges. Adapting to teamwork was hard, because some people weren’t aware of any design issue and just defending their selves, at the end we agreed upon on the same ground. Another skill that I developed was my communication skills. There were another department called “communication and guest relations department.” People who are selected to there were successful at both verbal and sign-communication. This school club taught me how to communicate and use effective language to sell our product.

On the other hand, there were of course benefits of working collaboratively. Since everyone wasn’t perfect at a single topic, everyone was asking things to one another and consulting to our head manager.

I highly showed commitment and perseverance to this CAS Project. I continued involving it at least 1 year and still actively in the alumni-team of organization, so it has been 1 year and 5 months. Every Wednesday, at the club lesson times of school, we were meeting and discussing on our agenda topic. Other than school time, at weekends, we were meeting and executing our meetings with sponsors and authorities. Still, I’ve been attending to Young Entrepreneurs Alumni Meetings.

CAS Creativity - Portfolio Preparation

At 6th of May, I started to prepare my portfolio for the industrial/product design course. I started to go to a course called Mahir Guven Design Academy. Mr. Guven is a famous artist in Turkey which helps students to prepare both national and international entry exams. I’ve been drawing for 7 years and I always loved art. My drawing journey started at primary school with the help of art courses in school. At 5th grade, I prepared my end-of-the-year art exhibition in school. Until then, I always continued to draw by myself. As soon as I decide to go to a Design Undergraduate course in college, I realized that I need to prepare my portfolio. However, I wasn’t prepared enough to construct a well-prepared professional portfolio. Until then I always used pen and pencil to draw.

I had some challenges about drawing before I start the course. I was only using pen and pencil. I couldn’t draw a colorful sketch of any object in 3-D and I couldn’t draw any car sketches which is my only dream. This course taught me and developed me in terms of using markers, drawing new objects in 3-D, painting with oil paint and so forth. I really developed my vision and my skills with the help of tutors in this course.

I showed a high commitment and perseverance to this course. I started at May 2018, and finished at February 2019. In this process, I went to course every week except some exceptions. I made 30 pieces of work which can be put to portfolio. I involved regularly to this creativity experience and it taught me a lot.

In the course, we worked collaboratively with other students to do some projects. Also, with the assistant tutors of Mr. Guven, I worked collaboratively to create some projects. At the beginning, when I can’t draw that good, assistant tutors helped and showed me how to draw. They gave me lectures about the fundamentals of design and drawing process. Afterwards, with collaboration with them, we created some projects. I also collaborated with other students and created common projects, where I highly enjoyed it.

We know that art conveys knowledge and it can also harbor knowledge related with global issues. I not only sketched drawings about modern design, but also oil-paints and charcoal sketches relevant with global issues. I was well aware of current global issues and reflected them to my paintings. For instance, I draw basic hands and feet to practice my free-hand sketching, but I also tried to show problems related with body and health due to advancement in technology. Another painting of mine shows the global slum problem. I paint a grey city which consists of houses one after the other. These reflect current global problems.

CAS Creativity - Playing Piano

I’ve been playing piano for 2 years. I started to play the piano by the encouragement of my friend Arda. He was playing piano in advance and I also played piano in advance. I actually first learned to play the piano when I was 7 years old. But he impressed me and I decided to start to play the piano again after a long break.
I developed myself so much that I play some pieces from famous pianists like Chopin, Beethoven and Schubert. Before, I had some struggles while playing the piano. I also played a short time while I was at 8th grade. To exemplify such struggles, I was experiencing a mis-coordination between my hands. Whe

n my right hand was playing a specific melody, my left hand can’t adapt and play a different melody. As we know, in intermediate and harder piano pieces, there isn’t any synchronization between both hands. I learned to coordinate both hands at the same time. Another new skill that I have developed is not also to start playing harder pieces, but also to start playing different types of pieces, like nocturnes, waltzes and impromptus. I learned that music isn’t just composed of playing the piano, but also, it’s essential to learn the theoretical knowledge and terms about music. I enlarged my capacity about the background knowledge of music, the rhythms and the types of music pieces. With the help of pre-learned theoretical knowledge, I realized that I can play even better, because it helps when you have a rhythm knowledge while performing it. Playing different types of classical music, like nocturne and waltzes, developed my hand coordination. Formerly, it was like a nightmare to play the piano and I wasn’t willing to play, but now, it’s a deep wish inside m
e to play every day and to discover very different pieces.

I collaborated with my friend Arda and he helped me to re-start to play the piano. Some pieces that I heard from him moved me and lead me to start again. I planned my process of playing the piano as a timeline and during the summer between IB1 and IB2, I did my best to develop myself. With Arda, we tried to play a piano piece together, he was going to play the left hand while I was going to play the right hand.
This is the very activity that I highly showed commitment and perseverance. I’ve been playing the piano for 2 years and I never quit to play it. When I start it, it was hard for me because I played it 3 years ago. But after a long break I start again and I’m still playing it. Day by day, I increased my working tempo and learned new pieces. When I couldn’t manage to play a part, I tried over and over again until I make it. At the end I am successful and I enjoy playing it.

CAS Creativity - Ping Pong Machine Design

We have been playing ping pong for 1.5 year, which we have started to play at the beginning of IB1, in school. The school has a ping pong table and we are playing every day. The problem we have been facing from the very beginning is that we lack of ping pong balls. Due to we don’t have any area to store balls, we bring them at every break and then leave it. They were lost and every time we need to bring another ball. In a day, sometimes we lose 2 or 3 balls and therefore, everyone was complaining about the lack of balls. This problem leads me to find a solution and find that we need a ping pong ball storage area besides the table. My friend Arda joined me in this process. I organized this event as a CAS Creativity Experience and I designed a compact ball machine which we all can access easily to it. It has a suitable design for both to store balls and to put balls into it after playing. At 8 May, I visited my uncle, he is a mechanical engineer, and we assembled the machine. He also helped me to draw the mechanical drawing of the machine.

I was always bad at time management, I have been struggling during the process of doing something and leaving it until the last minute. But in this project, in a limited amount of time, I decided to do a ping pong ball machine and actually produced it in a short time. I’ve already identified my weakness on time management and develop it accordingly. I wasn’t previously actually undertaken this skill, I’ve always had struggles about time management on many IB Internal Assessments, projects and also in my personal project.

I planned this CAS creativity experience and I can say that this can be my best organization ever in IB program. I collaborated with my best friend and decided to find a solution to a common problem in a short amount of time. I designed the structure and shape of the machine where my uncle helped me about the technical interface and assembling it. I showed my experience about this project and planning, by collaboration with my friend.

With the help of the contribution of my friend, we planned this project in a pair. He sometimes denies what I said and thought of a different design, which were the challenges of the process. The benefits were deciding in common and sharing the costs of ping pong balls. Overall, doing this project with a pair, rather than by myself is great.
